The City & Guilds Certificate of Competence in Abnormal Loads Escort Driver training has begun as the first candidates enter our Training Centre of Excellence.
New to our Training programme for 2016 both the City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Abnormal Loads (Escort Driver) and City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate of Competence in Abnormal Loads (Escort Manager) training courses equip individuals with the required skills to sufficiently undertake the task of escorting abnormal loads or abnormal load vehicles.
The first of their kind, these two courses launched by the Heavy Transport Association aim to improve public safety through training of abnormal load escorts leading to improved competence. Presently anyone aged 21 or over with a car licence, a vehicle, some amber flashing lights and an ‘Abnormal Load’ sign can become an escort without any training, knowledge of the legislation or a check of competence.
These training courses cover Driver & vehicle legislative requirements, current Codes of Practice & industry best practices, how to prepare the escort vehicle(s), check the condition of transport vehicles & loads and how to brief all personnel before departure. From here we move on to the appropriate positioning of the vehicles on the road, effective communication, how to respond to unexpected situations and post-operative checks & movement reports.
For Driver's who wish to prepare for and/or understand the role and responsibilities of managing an abnormal load the City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate of Competence in Abnormal Loads (Escort Manager) is also available. Along with the areas above, the Escort Manager course also covers the roles and responsibilities of all parties involved & the documentation relating to abnormal load movements, planning, briefing, checks and managing vehicles & traffic, responding to unexpected situations and managing the closure of abnormal load movements.
The qualifications are not compulsory for Escorts or Managers but they do set clearly defined and measurable standards backed by the City & Guilds who issue a Certificate of Competence and a verifiable photo Identity Card to those passing the qualifications. To ensure currency and competence the qualifications are valid for three years after which a reassessment by the City & Guilds is required.
Courses are taking place throughout the year, for more information please contact our Training Team.
